Worse still, Thomas had no right to know where they had been sent, or who they were living with - that information could only come from Sun-Kim, who he couldn't contact.Īrmed with only a handful of photos from their childhood, he began looking for them, showing the pictures and telling his story in the vain hope that somebody would know something. With no legal right to find out where Sandra and James had gone, they were lost to Thomas, until nowįearful for his children, he contacted the State Department to help track them down, and they came back with shocking news. In 1976, without Thomas knowing, Sun-Kim put the children up for adoption and changed address. It seemed that Sun-Kim had moved, but the new occupants gave no forwarding address. It was really hard, and there was just no way I could get over there.'Įventually his letter started being returned to him. He told ABC: 'At that time, I had just went through bankruptcy. Then, in 1974, Sun-Kim wrote to him offering to give him James and Sandra, but with a catch: he would have to go to Korea to collect them. The pair divorced in absentia in 1973, though Thomas said he kept writing to her and asking for updates on the children. Though he didn't know it at the time, that would be the last time he would see them for four decades, as the relationship between him and Sun-KIm slowly deteriorated. With the legal process dragging on, he volunteered for a dangerous tour of Vietnam in order to be closer to them, and in 1971 he took a 30-day leave of absence to visit.
